Water for a Generation View related PDF presentation
Water for A Generation is a three year grant funded by The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation (TCCAF) to develop 50 solar water systems in Swaziland, the country with the highest HIV/AIDS rate worldwide. SAI provides technical support and oversight. This project is part of the Africa-wide Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN) seeking to provide 4 billion gallons of clean water to the people of Africa.
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. is working through the local NGO, NCM Swaziland, to develop water projects targeting clinics, schools, HIV/AIDS Support Groups, and orphan care centers as a way to leverage the impact of clean water on the broader pandemic of HIV/AIDS.
As of Sept. 30, 2010, the project has completed 15 systems that serve 11 clinics 7 schools, 2 orphan care projects and 4 agricultural projects reaching 4,600 direct community beneficiaries, 6,500 students, 14,500 patients per month. 13.5 million liters pumped in Year One, estimated annual amount: 26 million per year.
The solar systems have a 10 year warranty. Each site forms a water committee and establishes a maintenance fund that will pay for a new pump before the current one wears out because they don't have to pay for electricity each month. This allows each system to be self sustaining for the life of the solar panels, which can exceed 25-30 years.
